I am a United States citizen who was born to Irish-American parents in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1939. My father was a physician and my mother was a nurse. I have two sisters and a brother. One of my sisters is a nurse. The other sister is an art teacher. My brother is also a priest. He is pastor of a parish near Baltimore. I have four nieces and one nephew. I attended Loyola High School in Baltimore and then entered the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus. I did my early seminary training in Pennsylvania and then went to St. Louis University to study philosophy and German. For three years I was assigned to St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, where I taught German and Latin. I studied theology in both Baltimore and New York City. After ordination to the priesthood in 1970, I returned to Philadelphia where I taught German and theology and served as principal for four years. I then became the delegate for secondary education in my Province. From 1985 to 2000 I was at Georgetown Preparatory School near Washington, first as principal and then as president. In 2000 I went to the Jesuit school in Gdynia, Poland, where I taught English and helped in the formation of teachers and administrators. In 2001 the Father General of the Jesuits called me to Rome to be the Secretary for Education.
When I visited Rome for the first time 43 years ago, I followed the tradition of throwing a coin into the Fountain of Trevi and making a wish that I would return in the future. I never dreamed that I would actually live in Rome, but here I am. After almost eight years in the city, I think that I am only beginning to appreciate all that it has to offer. One of Rome’s great advantages is that so many of the things worth seeing are in the center of the city and within walking distance from one another. I have visited churches, monuments and archeological sites. I have taken part in the festivals. I have gone to concerts and art exhibits. The Romans take foreigners in stride. The streets are relatively safe. The food is great. I would say that my most memorable experience was the funeral of Pope John Paul II, when vast crowds of people from all over the world gathered in a calm and orderly fashion to say a reverent farewell to a man who was almost larger than life. Of course, Rome does have its negative points. The traffic is chaotic. The city could be cleaner. There are too many strikes. In general, though, I love being in this vibrant, cosmopolitan city and I know that I will miss it when I return to my country.
I have been to the Czech Republic twice--once in early February 2005, and more recently in early November 2008. In February 2005 I spent a few days in Prague. I remember that the days were crystal clear but bitterly cold. I was struck by the charming situation of the city, stretching along the Vltava River with the venerable Charles Bridge dividing it in two and the Prague Castle hovering over a panorama of buildings of different colors and styles. In spite of the cold, I was content to wander for hours through the old streets, taking in the sights and reflecting on all the important historical events which had taken place here over the centuries. To me Prague captures the essence of Central Europe. I would have to agree that it is one of the most beautiful cities of Europe.

Jsem Američan a pocházím z Baltimoru (Maryland) z irsko-americké rodiny. Narodil jsem se roku 1939. Můj otec pracoval jako lékař a má matka jako zdravotní sestra. Mám dvě sestry a jednoho bratra. Jedna z mých sester pracuje jako zdravotní sestra a druhá jako učitelka umění. Můj bratr je, stejně jako já, knězem. Působí ve farnosti poblíž Baltimoru. Mám čtyři neteře a jednoho synovce. Navštěvoval jsem Loyola High School v Baltimoru (střední škola) a vstoupil jsem do jezuitského řádu v Marylandské provincii. V Pensylvánii jsem absolvoval seminář, pak jsem odešel na St.Louis University, abych zde studoval filozofii a němčinu. Tři roky jsem na St.Joseph’s Preparatory School ve Philadelphii vyučoval němčinu a latinu. Teologii jsem studoval v Baltimoru i v New Yorku. Po vysvěcení na kněze roku 1970 jsem se vrátil do Philadelphie, kde jsem učil němčinu a teologii. Zde jsem také čtyři roky pracoval jako ředitel. Poté jsem se stal zástupcem pro střední školství ve své provincii. Od roku 1985 do roku 2000 jsem působil na Georgetown Preparatory School blízko Washingtonu, nejprve jako ředitel a později jako rektor. V roce 2000 jsem odešel do Polska do Gdyně na jezuitskou školu, kde jsem vyučoval angličtinu a pomáhal jsem formovat učitele a administrátory. Roku 2001 mě náš generální představený povolal do Říma, abych se stal sekretářem pro vzdělání.
Když jsem před třiačtyřiceti lety poprvé navštívil Řím, řídil jsem se tradicí a vhodil jsem minci do Fontány di Trevi s přáním opět se sem v budoucnu vrátit. Nikdy jsem nesnil o tom, že budu žít v Římě, ale teď tu jsem.
Po téměř osmi letech ve městě si myslím, že teprve začínám doceňovat, co všechno může nabídnout. Jednou z velkých výhod Říma je, že mnoho zajímavých památek je v centru nedaleko od sebe. Navštěvuji kostely, památky a archeologické vykopávky. Účastním se festivalů, koncertů a výstav umění. Římané jsou na cizince zvyklí. Ulice jsou celkem bezpečné, jídlo je výborné. Řekl bych, že mým největším zážitkem byl pohřeb papeže Jana Pavla II., kdy se obrovské zástupy lidí z celého světa v poklidu shromáždily, aby se rozloučily s mužem, který byl téměř větší než život. Samozřejmě má Řím i své stinné stránky. Doprava je chaotická. Město by mohlo být čistější. Je zde příliš stávek.Vcelku vzato miluji život v tomto rušném kosmopolitním městě a vím, že mi bude chybět, až se jednou vrátím do své země.
Českou republiku jsem navštívil dvakrát. Poprvé na začátku února roku 2005 a nedávno podruhé, a to počátkem listopadu roku 2008.
V únoru roku 2005 jsem strávil v Praze několik dní. Pamatuji si, že dny byly průzračně čisté, ale mrazivé. Byl jsem udiven okouzlující polohou města, které se rozprostírá při řece Vltavě a je rozděleno ve dví majestátným Karlovým mostem, a Pražským hradem, vznášejícím se nad panoramatem budov různých barev a stylů. Navzdory chladu jsem se s radostí celé hodiny procházel starými ulicemi, prohlížel jsem si památky a přemítal jsem o všech těch důležitých historických událostech, které se zde během staletí odehrály. Pro mne je Praha esencí střední Evropy. Musím souhlasit, že je to jedno z nejkrásnějších měst v Evropě.
